Sue Kemp

Sue, a Johannesburger all her life, has two grown up children and two grandchildren. She has always had a strong interest in the fine arts and went as a student to the Inscape School of Design in Johannesburg in the mid seventies.

There she learnt all about the many aspects of architectural draughting, design and rendering. After completing her diploma she was invited back to Inscape as a teacher, which she did for the next 6 years. During this time she ran her own design business specialising in design presentation and also started giving art lessons, which she has been doing ever since. It is a tribute to her teaching skill that many of her students have won prestigious art prizes throughout South Africa.
Sue has been a member of the Watercolour Society of South Africa for many years and was elected chairperson in 2000/1. In 2001 she was made a Fellow of the Society, a rare honour of which she is very proud.

Sue KempFor the past 10 years Sue has painted predominantly in oils, but occasionally departs into acrylics and watercolour. One of her favourite subjects is the South African landscape. The vast spaces, light, colours, variety and natural beauty of South Africa are a continuing inspiration and challenge. Her other love is painting small town buildings and houses, visiting small towns in the Freestate, the Karoo and the lesser known villages along the Garden Route and the Winelands to find subject matter. She feels that too many of these historical buildings are being modernised and the flavour of these towns are disappearing and she therefore enjoys being able to preserve their heritage through her paintings. She has also painted many commissions of architectural subjects including a very interesting commission to paint old buildings throughout South Africa for each month of a prestigious calendar. She has also had a number of limited edition prints printed.
Sue has now been painting for over 25 years and has won awards in all types of media. She takes great pride in every painting and each one is totally unique, capturing the essence of a particular subject. Over the years she has developed her own style in oils and mainly uses a painting knife on stretched canvas. Locally she sells through her own gallery in George as well as a limited number of galleries in and around Gauteng, Plettenberg Bay and Cape Town . She has also sold to collectors and corporate offices overseas in England, Australia, America, Canada, Germany and Switzerland.
